Feathers Wins Title

Terra Mystica’s first time in the Century saw participation down somewhat from last year’s trial event, dropping from 62 unique players and 120 player starts to 48 players and 78 player starts.

Both heats ran well, with no problems or issues. The semi-finalists voted to select 5 factions on which they would bid. The most popular factions, in order, were Darklings, Engineers, Chaos Magicians, Alchemists, Halflings and Witches. With two black factions, Alchemists were dropped (outvoted by Darklings). The faction voting and bidding system for the semifinals did not work as well as I had hoped and will be changing next year based on feedback from the semifinalists and finalists.

Four players, Clinton Chan, Chad Walker, Ryan Feathers and Michael Assante had two heat wins. Each was assigned to a different semifinal table. Chad, Ryan and Michael won their semifinal games and advanced to the final, joined by Matt Hathrell.

Faction bidding for the final was Darklings to Chad for 18, Witches to Matt for 9, Chaos Magicians to Mike for 4, and Halflings to Ryan for 0. The Darklings were cut off from broad development early and struggled to stay in competition, but Halflings, Witches and Chaos Magicians were contending for every point throughout the game. Final score was 177 Ryan Feathers (Halflings), 165 Matt Hathrell (Witches), 161 Michael Assante (Chaos Magicians), and 140 Chad Walker (Darklings).

I am not going to provide details of the final game here – two of the finalists have posted excellent game reports at Board Game Geek. Michael Assante at https://www.boardgamegeek.com/forum/1203577/terra-mystica/sessions and Ryan Feathers at https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/2036517/wbc-2018-raniors-quest-terra-mystica-championship.

Plans for next year:

Two heats, with random seating and turn order – players choose factions in turn order per base rules. Extra tiles, tweaked Fire & Ice board and/or Fire & Ice turn order permitted in both heats and the semifinal if available and no player objects.

Advancement will be by most points per the following:

  • 1st place: 1000 + (1st place score / 2nd place score)
  • 2nd place (4 player game): 100 + 10 * (2nd place score / 1st place score)
  • 2nd place (3 player game): 50 + 10 * (2nd place score / 1st place score)

In the heats both players in a tie for 1st or 2nd will be credited with the tied place. In the semifinal and final ties will be broken by most remaining resources.

All four semifinal tables will use Fire & Ice bidding to assign factions. All boards will use the same board setup and factions. Four factions will be chosen randomly from the base 14 factions (excluding Auren, Fakirs and Giants). One variant that will be used if a majority of semifinalists support it is assigning turn order to the four factions up for bid before bidding starts.

The final will use extra tiles and Fire & Ice turn order and the same faction bidding system as the semifinal.
