Wildes Wins Inaugural Beta Colony Event

This was the first year Beta Colony was played at WBC, bringing together 29 players to create their own prosperous colonies. Many players learned Beta Colony at the demo just prior to the first heat. While the GM only had two copies of the game, one player ran back to their room to get a copy, Skip Maloney brought the Rio Grande copy, and York Dobyns even went and bought a copy so we had enough copies to play. Luckily we had the perfect amount of copies in the end so everyone could play.

Once the heats began players zoomed their rockets around the board to collect valuable resources. Unfortunately, these resources are limited to where in the universe you can fly to. Becoming an issue for many players, as they needed more resources than possible. Not being able to get the correct resources became the demise for some, and there was no returning from it. While, the victors planned their missions well and collected everything they needed to erect colonization pods. Creating such colonies took strategic planning and some luck with the die rolls each round.

Both heat one and two went great, progressing 12 players to the semi-finals. Players used their resources to create full-fledged Beta Colonies. Although, only four could progress to the final. These four being: Chris Wildes, Connie Vogelmann, Brandan Buchanan, and Ryan Feathers. All players had conflicts with the final and decided it would be best to play at 11pm that evening.

The final began with much enthusiasm and energy. The players zipped around the board quickly gaining resources for pods. Soon they completed pods and placed almost all their people on the pods. Once they filled in all the areas on the board with pods the players had to be creative with their last turns. In the end all players were tired and ready for bed once the game came to a close near 1am.

The overall victory went to Chris, Connie came in second, Brandan in third, and Ryan in fourth place. Fifth and sixth place were decided by who came in second to overall first and second during semi-finals. Fifth place went to Shantanu Saha and sixth went to Brian Mountford.
