Culhane Triumphs In Inaugural Dunkirk Tournament!

DUNKIRK: France 1940 made its first appearance at WBC this year! A good number of gamers attended the Demo on Friday evening, with many of them taking part in the tournament's first round which started later that night. Players represented a mix of veterans of the game and those just learning about it.

The first round saw four tournament competition games and some non-competitive teaching games. The victory conditions for Dunkirk: France 1940 require the German player to achieve 10 Victory Points to win the game. The four competition games saw three Allied victories, with the Germans coming very close to winning each of those, as the German player in each one scored nine points. The fourth game saw a German victory, with their side scoring 10 VPs.

Close games in the quarterfinals gave way to some more decisive results in the semifinals. Fred Bauer, who won the Dunkirk: France 1940 tournament at a convention this past winter, scored a win as the Allies in his semifinal game, holding the Germans to seven VPs. In the other semifinal, Denny Culhane, a multiple Empire of the Sun champion at WBC over the years, scored a solid win as the Germans, notching 13 of a possible 14 VPs.,/p>

In the Championship Game, Fred commanded the German forces against Denny's Allied side. Fred chose a German strategy card which included the coastal towns of Dunkirk and Calais as some of the victory objectives. The game was intensely contested, with Fred pushing German forces into both towns on the next to last game turn. However, throughout the game, Denny engaged in a vigorous, active defense with the Allied forces, engaging German units at opportune moments and inflicting some significant losses on them -- including the two most powerful German armor blocks. Denny's efforts proved decisive, as his elimination of four German blocks reduced the German victory point by two, bringing the Allies a "Germans held to 8 VP" victory and Denny the first-ever Dunkirk: France 1940 WBC Championship!
