Thiessen Triumphs!

In a year where most events saw an increase in attendance, RA experienced a decline. RA went from just missing the 200 mark in 2018, to reaching 180 participants in 2019. RA did set a single heat record in its First Saturday heat as 119 players filled 24 games. The big surprise was the decrease in attendance for the Monday and Tuesday night heats which could be attributed to later start times than in previous years. The traditional 9am wake-up call heat was also a surprise as 16 games were filled, albeit 4 player games, but that still was an impressive turn-out for the early morning heat which probably could be attributed to the fact that you only had to win once to advance to the first time ever quarterfinals.

So in all there were 68 games with 53 unique winners and 14 multiple heat winners with Eric Mosso being the only triple heat winner. So the 14 multiple heat winners were awarded a bye into the semifinals which left 39 single heat winners for the first time ever quarter-finals. The main complaint I get year after year was that if you didn’t win your first heat played you had very little chance of making the semifinals. So this year we went with “win and you’re in the quarterfinals”. The only complaint I received was that we would have to have a 4-player final.

The 7 quarterfinal winners were Mike Brazinski, Anthony Bosca, Brad Sherwood, Matthew Thiessen, Gunner Parauda, Hein Hundal, and Michael Thiessen. It’s interesting to note that only one quarterfinal winner won their semifinal game and he ended up winning the tournament.

In semifinal #1 Oid beat Antony Saccenti, Mike Kaltman, and Gunner Parauda who all tied for 2nd by 7 points.

In semi-final #2 Calle Perry beat Kevin Wojtaszczyk, 51-47 in a high scoring game.

In semi-final #3 Matthew Thiessen beat Robert Kirchner 47-46 in a very close game.

In semi-final #4 Rodney Bacigalupo beat Brad Sherwood by 6.

So the 4-player final was set with all newcomers who had never made the finals of RA before. Congratulations to Matthew Thiessen who bested the entire field of 180 participants.
