Fuegi Repeats Championship

David desJardins returned as GM, after originating this event in 1994. The field of 23 players was the largest since 2015. The six previous champions were separated in the draw, so they would not meet in the first two rounds.

Among these previous winners, Michael Pustilnik was eliminated in round 1 by Robb Effinger, and Bruno Wolff was also out after losing a mutual-elimination roll-off to Winton Lemoine. Sean McCullough also failed to win his first game, advancing to round 2 with a bye and then being dispatched by George Nichols.

7-time champion Aaron Fuegi met 4-time champion David desJardins in round 3, and dispatched him very quickly with multiple warlocks (not the first time this has happened!). 4-time champion Brian Sutton advanced to round 4 before being eliminated by George Nichols, for his second elimination of a previous champion. This set up Aaron Fuegi vs. George Nichols in the final.

In the final game, after multiple battles both players were stripped of recruiters in their Titan stacks --- George had an 8-die titan with 2 angels, and Aaron had a 9-die titan with two angels. George had the opportunity to attack Aaron, and took it --- he had a slight advantage with an angel to summon. But a normal result for this battle is mutual elimination, and that is what happened, before George could summon his angel.

The usual tournament rule is a roll-off in the case of mutual elimination, but by mutual agreement between the finalists they elected a rematch instead. In the rematch, George had an immediate poor start, going second and rolling 2 with a mulligan 5 on his first turn, so he was well behind in recruiting early, while Aaron again picked up multiple warlocks. All of George's split offs were quickly killed by Aaron's stacks. Around turn 10, George was compelled to attack angel, 3 cyclops, and 3 rangers in the brush, with his titan legion. The rolls favored Aaron and he had his 8th Titan Two-player victory in 17 years.
