It was good year for Bitter Woods at and everything else at Seven Springs, because we had a WBC. There weren't as many players as there was a while ago, but we reached the player threshold of 16 anyhow.
In the prelims, Johnny Hasay finished atop the leaderboard, with Michael Mitchell, Bill Morse, Wade Hyatt, Frank Sinigaglio and Bruno Sinigaglio rounding out the score board. Unfortunately, Johnny had to leave the convention early to deal with a family emergency, so the playoff round pitted Michael Mitchell against Frank Sinigaglio with Bill Morse up against Wade Hyatt.
In the Wade Hyatt-Bill Morse semi-final, Bill playing the Americans did what he does best - counterattacks. The Germans might have won the six-turn scenario, but Bill's counterattacks killed more than three Mech Infantry, and that loss of that VP made a German victory impossible.
In the Mike Mitchell-Frank Sinigaglio semi-final, things went badly for Frank with lousy results for the Germans on the 16AM and 16PM turns. Frank eventually had some good results, but Michael's meticulous American play shielded the victory condition hexes on the 18AM and 18PM turns.
That left skilled combatants Bill and Michael in the Championship. Michael won the roll to play the Americans in the eight-turn scenario. Eventually, the game boiled down to a number of critical attacks by Bill on the last turn against multiple victory hexes. Alas, the dice were unkind, and Michael's Americans cruised to victory.
Congratulations to Michael Mitchell on his first WBC Bitter Woods Championship.
