Woods Captures Sagrada Title!

After a successful inaugural year at the World Boardgaming Championships in 2019, Sagrada had to wait patiently through two years of COVID before returning for its sophomore appearance. Like many GMs, I was happy to return to the WBC in 2022, but very unsure what to expect in terms of overall attendance. I was also unsure if there would still be enthusiasm for Sagrada 3 years later, which is a lifetime in board game years. But my fellow gamers came through, and attendance for the event exceeded my expectations. Attendance was steady through all Heats, with Heat 1 having 78 players, Heat 2 with 81, and Heat 3 with 73. Overall, Sagrada pulled in 132 unique entrants, only a small drop from 2019.

The preliminary heats were competitive, with 9 players emerging as double winners, guaranteeing themselves a spot in the Semifinal. All other players who made it to the Semifinal had a minimum of a 1st and 2nd place finish. Semifinal results were as follows:

  • Table 1 - Winner: Amy Rule (61 points), Brooke Hallings (52), Nicole Bosca (51), Howard Marron (44)
  • Table 2 - Winner: Bronwyn Woods (61), Brandon Buchanan (56), Darin Murphy (50), Patrick McLafferty (33)
  • Table 3 - Winner: Michael Vaz (72), Nick Henning (69), Angela Bender (67), Mike Salvato (60)
  • Table 4 - Winner: Rolinda Colinson (67), Rob Schneeberger (56), Ean Cagwin (51), Erik Schlosser (50)

For the Final, public objectives and tool cards were drawn randomly by the GM. The public objectives were: Column Color Variety, Column Shade (number) Variety, and Color Diagonals. The tool cards were: Lathekin (move exactly two dice, obeying all placement restrictions), Grozing Pliers (after drafting, increase/decrease the value of the die by 1), and Cork-backed Straightedge (after drafting, place the die in a spot that is not adjacent to another die). Right out of the gate in round 1, Bronwyn used Cork-backed Straightedge to really open up her board and allow for more placement options throughout the game. The dual column objectives proved to be challenging, with each finalist making an early placement error that impacted those objectives. But each player later used Lathekin to move two dice and correct those errors. This year’s finalists definitely proved adept at using the tool cards at just the right moment and to maximum effectiveness. In the later rounds, the game looked to be extremely tight. Rolinda’s luck started to run out as the dice she needed just weren’t being rolled. But the dice gods were smiling brightly on Bronwyn, Amy and Michael, who round after round were able to draft the perfect dice. As a result, the scores were fairly high, with Bronwyn ultimately prevailing with 83 points. Amy came in second with 78 points, Michael in 3rd with 75 points, and Rolinda in 4th with 56 points. Congratulations to Bronwyn and to all of the finalists!

A heartfelt thank you to all the players who came to the event and whose enthusiasm helped make Sagrada a successful event. Based on player feedback, a rules tweak will be made next year and the public objectives will be known before players have to select their boards. A special thanks to my Assistant GM’s Howard Marron and Danique Martin who really did all the work while I just schmoozed with the players. This event would not happen without them. See everyone next year at WBC 2023!

Looks like he has a tough decision to make.
