Galaxy Trucker (GXT) WBC 2023 Event Report
Updated November 1, 2023
23 Players Karl Henning Event History
2023 Champion & Laurels

Attention Intergalactic Plumbing Delivery People! We need you!

Galaxy Trucker ran quite smoothly in 2023, but attendance has continued to dwindle. The new edition did attract some interest, but definitely not enough to compete with hot new things, so the event is pretty much on life support. Trying to make some time to show up for a Heat will really help things if you can spare the time.

The general feeling among veterans was the new edition was a significant positive improvement with the titling system over prettiest ship. The drawback is that without a second expansion, the game is not challenging enough for experienced players, and the difference in building speeds becomes pretty much the entire game. Players did enjoy it in earlier rounds, but we needed the enhanced carnage for the Final.

Semifinal turnout was down even more, we had 9 different people win a heat game, but only 6 showed for the Semifinal. We adopted a 2 games of 3 with the top 2 advancing, which seemed reasonable.

In the Final, we had 3 out of 4 repeat customers, with oft finalist Karl Henning replacing Sceadeau D'Tela. The first rough roads was bum batteries. David desJardins had a strong ship with many guns, but no cargo space to pick up goods. He still amassed a large lead.

In the second round the card was nasty surprise and flipped into paranoia. With almost no planets in the round the card made little impact. Karl killed a bunch of enemies and caught up to David's score.

The final round was explosive batteries, always good for a bang. David had a critical building mistake and wound up dropping out early. David Finberg and Karl were battling, with Karl in the lead on the travel track due to having more engines, and he was just able to squeak out enough damage to kill the final large pirate. If he had missed, your humble moderator could have killed it, a 30 dollar swing in a game he lost by 32, so very close to the entire difference. But with Karl's strong play, and no batteries exploding unpleasantly, walking away with the title.

A fun game of Galaxy Trucker for all ages. All smiles for these Truckers.
