Ahoy, and welcome to Pirate’s Cove, land of legendary pirates and green sailors with something to prove. This year, 81 different captains took to the Cove to demonstrate their skills, in a total of 33 games over three Heats. Each captain got a small stipend to outfit their ship, and a good shove out of port to get underway and sail they did!
Captain Jen is quite proud of her fellow pirates for keeping their ships tidy this year, with every table finishing in every heat within the 2 hour time-slot. Pirates and clocks are famously ill fellows, but the slowest pirate is like to get grabbed by the Royal Navy, and this year no one wanted to take their chances with Admiral Adjudication. Huzzah!
Twenty-five pirates qualified for the Semifinal, at a time that is quite early for a pirate, and often enough not everyone who qualifies rouses in time to sail, but this year a whopping 23 of the qualifiers made it, leaving the usual crowd of alternates stranded.
Family rivalries dominate the final match here in Pirate’s Cove on a schedule regular enough to set your watch by, and this year was no different, with not one but two Collinson’s, Joe and Ben Sr, plus Allyson Thoma, and frequent finalists Randy Martin and Jodi Folk. Ben and Jodi told many a tale about their exploits early in the match and found themselves ahead in points, but an early lead is never a sure win, and by the end the tides had turned. With all secret points spilled, Jodi fell to last, led by Allyson in 4th, Ben in 3rd, Randy in 2nd, with Joe Collinson pulling a victory out at the last moment. Last year’s winner Sarah Stewart found herself a 6th place spot as a result, having taken second to Joe in the Semifinal match mere hours earlier.
