A big thank you to all players who came out for Saint Petersburg this year!
Our turnout this year was much better than last year, with 41 tables in the heats and 98 unique players. More than half of our players played in two or more Heats, and over a dozen played in all three.
Competition is always tight, and we had three ties for 1st place during our Heats, and one game decided by 1 point. Our closest game was in Heat 2 with scores of 66-63-63-62.
In Heat 1 we had a real slugfest. The winning score in a 4 player game was 113 points, with 2nd and 3rd tied at 100 points. The 4th place player still came in at 76 points, which would have been enough to win in almost half of our games.
The Semifinal saw even more tight scoring games. Two tables finished with less than 8 points separating 1st and 4th place. We had several ties behind the leader. One table finished with scores of 51-44-44-43 while another finished with 42-36-35-35.
When the dust had settled, the four players in our Final were Chad Martin, Andrew Martin, Keith Levy, and Rick Miller. Random draw had father and son, Chad and Andrew, on opposite sides of the table.
The Final was light on nobles, especially higher end nobility, with only one Judge in the 2nd round and one Mistress coming out in the 4th round. One observatory was out in Round 1 and was used for a noble, but only one noble slot.
Game end was triggered in round 5 as the last building came onto the board. Chard Martin maintained his lead on the board and finished with 4 unique nobles for 53 points. Andrew Martin collected 6 nobles to give him a score of 49. Keith Levy moved to 3rd place with 43 points and 4 nobles. Rick Miller’s 5 nobles weren’t enough to help him pull ahead and he came in 4th place.
