Another Wolff Wins Wingspan!
With 185 entrants, Wingspan contestants once again flocked towards this mid-weight Euro in droves. With the Power Four birds removed this year and tables capped at 4 players, the games felt much more competitive this year. After three Heats, we paired down to 16 players where the lowest placements ended up being a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd.
After the Semifinal, it was down to Dan Harthan, Michael Thiessen, Sam Wolff, and Lumin Sperling. Round 1 started with most players keeping 3 cards while Lumin kept 4 and even fished for a 5th on his first turn. Everyone seems to be at least somewhat in it by the end of Round 1 and, most importantly of all, everyone is cracking up and having a good time. Things got so casual at one point that the game dissolved into pure bird facts.
Round 2 hits and Sam seems to be running away with it with his vulture hitting pretty consistently. After playing the cards in his hands, Sam seems to have a huge egg laying engine with three actions left to do.
By Round 3, Dan’s engine was finally humming but by that point Sam’s engine was just blasting off and there was no end in sight. By the time Round 4 hit, it had gotten so bad that players were giving Sam resources. In the end, the players were absolutely correct as Sam took home the shield.
I would like to thank my assistant GM’s (Patti Swift, Laura Miller, and Sara Ward). Without those three, the event would not have gone as smoothly as it did. Patti especially deserves all of the praise that anyone can give her.
Thanks so much to everyone who played!
