The attendance for Cascadia increased to 111 unique players this year. There were a total of 250 player starts (206 in Heats and 44 in Elimination Rounds) in 63 games (52 in Heats and 11 in Elimination Rounds). A special thanks to Assistant GM’s Adele Gibbens, Henry Allen and Amy Klayder.
Cascadia is a thrilling game with very close scores. Over the 63 games played in this year’s tournament, the first place score was only 5 points higher than the second place on average. The per person average scores were 59 in Wildlife, 32 in Habitats, and 2 in Nature Tokens for an average total score of 93. This was exactly the same as the year before! ?
The average scores per game for each of the Wildlife were: Bear (48), Elk (50), Salmon (48), Hawk (51) and Fox (37).
Heat 1
64 players were divided into 16 4-player games. The highest Wildlife score was 71 by Anastasia Tircuit. The highest Habitat score was 42 by Jordan Fernando. The most Nature Tokens was 8 by Eyal Mozes and Susan McGrady. Lumin Sperling had the highest overall score of 108.
Heat 2
78 players were divided into 18 4-player games and two 3-player games. The highest Wildlife score was 80 by Elizabeth Yokeley, who also had the highest overall score of 114. The highest Habitat score was 42 by Chris Burnett. The most Nature Tokens was 7 by Sean Inoue and Bronwyn Woods (in the same game!).
Heat 3
64 players were divided into 16 4-player games. The highest Wildlife score was 71 by Nate Heiss. The highest Habitat score was 41 by Tripp Buchanan and Henry Allen. The most Nature Tokens was 7 by Barb Roeper. The highest overall score was 111 by Trevor Morris.
Quarterfinal
There were 41 participants in the Heats who won at least one game. Bronwyn Woods and Chris Burnett won all three of their Heat games. There were 7 participants who won two games during the Heats. There were 34 of the 41 winners who appeared to play in the Quarterfinal. The top 10 players were given a bye to the Semifinal. The remaining 24 players were divided into six 4-player games. Four of the six Quarterfinal games were won by 2 points or less, and one of those was won on a tiebreaker. The highest Wildlife score of the six games was 73 by Anastasia Tircuit. The highest Habitat score was 40 by Alex Anderson and Inger Henning. The most Nature Tokens was 7 by Haakon Monsen. The highest overall score was 107 by Joseph Carrick.
Semifinal
The 10 players with byes joined the 6 Quarterfinal winners in 4 tables of 4-player games, seeded by their ranking in the Heats. Anastasia Tircuit continued her high scores in Wildlife by scoring the highest score of 71, but she unfortunately did not have a high Habitat score, and lost to Henry Allen, who had the highest Habitat score of 43 as well as the highest overall score of 112. The most Nature Tokens was 6 by Nancy Arseneault. Henry had a convincing 112-99 win. Bronwyn Woods won 100-92, Candy Collins won 97-94 and Riley Kimminau squeaked by Chris Burnett, 101-100.
Final
Bronwyn Woods started off with a run of salmon and a partial ring of elk. Candy Collins started with a pair of foxes and a ring of elk. Henry Allen diversified and had one of each animal early in the game. Riley Kimminau concentrated on hawks at the very start and continued all throughout the game. At the halfway point, Bronwyn had a 2-point lead over Candy for the most Wildlife points. She had developed one run of salmon and was starting to work on hawk points. Candy had 7 fox points and was working on completing her elk ring. Henry was laying the groundwork for points in all the wildlife but had the fewest points at the halfway point. Riley was all-in on the hawks and started to work on foxes. At the end of the game, Candy had a narrow margin lead with 64 Wildlife points to Bronwyn’s 63, Henry’s 62 and Riley’s 60. However, Bronwyn had been plugging away at the Habitat points and had the most of those points with 37, to Riley’s 35, Candy’s 34 and Henry’s 33. Bronwyn also managed to keep 3 Nature Tokens to Candy’s 2, Henry’s 1 and Riley’s 0. Bronwyn ended up winning all of the Cascadia games she played in the event this year, winning the Final by a score of 103 followed by Candy 100, Henry 96 and Riley 95.
