A total of 12 people participated in the inaugural tournament for Commands & Colors: Samurai Battles. Although the turnout was light, the participants exulted and agonized over the dice and Dragon cards throughout the tournament.
Three Heats were played in order to determine who would advance to the Quarterfinals. Here are the cumulative battle results.
Heat 1: First Samurai Skirmish (Scenario 1)
One sweep and two splits. Red army wins 5 of the 6 games.
Heat 2: Koriyama Castle 1540 AD (Scenario 6)
One sweep and two splits. Red army again wins 5 of the 6 games.
Heat 3: Fourth Kawanakajima 1561 AD (Phase 1; Scenario 13)
One sweep and three splits. Red army wins 7 of 8 games.
The top 8 players, including Joe Harrison, Johnny Wilson, Geoff Heintzelman, and Jon Manley as the top seeds (each winning two Heats), started the Quarterfinal with the scenario of Second Konadai 1564 (AD; Scenario 18). This was one of the longer scenarios (and the only one that went over the time limit for the tournament). Due to the length of the scenario, the matches were not played to completion, but were stopped as soon as one player had clinched the match. Dennis Mishler, Joe Harrison, Ed de Bary, and Jon Manley all advanced.
The Semifinal scenario was Nunobeyama 1570 AD (Scenario 21). Jon Manley and Joe Harrison were matched in the first Semifinal, and Joe Harrison won both games to advance to the Final. The other match was much closer, with both players getting 6 banners over the two games. However, Ed deBary advanced to the Final by eliminating two more blocks than Dennis. The Blue army won 3 of 4 games in the Semifinal.
In the final, at Domyoji 1615 AD (Scenario 40), Ed de Bary came back from a 1-5 loss in the first match to win 5-0 in the second match and take the championship.
