The 2024 Space Base event maintained its popularity (especially among those who didn’t have any Semifinal or Final sessions for other games). 116 total entries over the two Heats resulted in 28 Heat winners. While the tie-breaking system was in place, three qualifiers did not come for the Semifinal which left us with a perfect 25 Semifinalists.
From those 25, Edison Honde, Molly Cinderella, and Chad Martin joined returning Finalists Brian Sutton and Alex Schlosser in the Final.
The players each focused early on building a particular slot on their boards. Alex was on the 7 slot, Brian got an early <-/-> card on the 8 slot, while Edison and Molly started on the 9 and 10 slot, respectively. Brian as the first to get a VP card flipped (in the 1 slot) to score on other player’s rolls while Molly managed to get <-/-> cards on both the 9 and 10 slots on her board. Chad was taking a different tack as he focused on building his lower number (3,4,5) slots. This enabled him to buy a Level 3 card relatively early in the game. While Chad was doing that, Edison was maximizing his card swapping power to try to get better cards in better slots.
As the game shifted towards scoring rather than board building, Chad got a good hit with a double 3 roll, scoring himself 6 VP’s. Chad was also benefiting from building out the lower number slots and was getting a lot of Energy (money) from other player’s rolls. This enabled him to start focusing on buying Colonies, starting with the 8 VP one. The others were noticing this, and Brian even acquired the “all other players lose 4VP’s” card. However, Chad continued to gain Energy consistently and turned that Energy into Colonies each of the next 3 turns. Ultimately going to 43 VP’s after buying the 5 VP Colony to trigger the end game. Brian did manage to follow with the -4 VP action, but the end game had already been triggered with Chad in a commanding position. The final score was Chad at 39, Edison 27, Molly 24, Alex 18 and Brian 14.
Thanks to everyone for coming out this year. I expect more of the same next year on the last Saturday of WBC.
