Twilight Struggle (TWS) WBC 2024 Event Report

Chauvin Captures Twilight Struggle Championship!

Going back to WBC 2023, we had an increase in the number of players by four over 2022, for a total of 40 players which got us a fifth plaque for 2024. Attendance was down for 2024 to 35 players and a total of 56 games played, we will have to see if we get to keep the fifth plaque for WBC 2025.

Round 1 was exactly even, with eight Soviet and eight American wins. The results went downhill for the USA after that, with the Soviets ahead nine wins to two in Round 3 and eight wins to one in Round 5, including the championship game, for a total of 36 Soviet wins and 20 American in the tournament. The earliest wins were by automatic victory in game turn 3 (three times), and the winner was decided in final scoring in nineteen games. There were 24 automatic victories before final scoring, six wins from Wargames, three nuclear wars from DEFCON 1, and four resignations.

We eliminated ties in individual games by changing the final scoring value of The China Card to one-half a point. The tiebreaker for standing in the tournament was the AREA rating as of one week before WBC of each opponent defeated. The results of every game have been reported to AREA for inclusion in cumulative standings. Opponents were assigned randomly for Rounds 1 through 3, with Rounds 4 and 5 seeded to give winners against low-ranking opponents a chance to face higher ranking opponents and have a better chance to take home a plaque.

With the increase in playing time, we did not have to adjudicate any games, the only game that ran over time enough to matter was the championship game, and it was decided to let them play it out.

Thanks to all the players for participating in Twilight Struggle 2024, and I hope to see you next year at WBC.
