Merchant of Venus (MOV) WBC 2025 Event Report
Updated November 6, 2025
54 Players Burdett, Bailey Event History
2025 Champion & Laurels

Burdett Youngest Winner Since 2004!

The “winner” of the first, non-annual (and non-existent) “I Forgot the Thilly Thing Was in Reverthe” Award is Bart Pisarik. Bart set an unbreakable record by losing the most pips of movement on any one turn. He was on Neutron Port, the northern Nav Circle in the MultiGen ship and rolled the normally super desirable roll of 6-6-6-6 with his Clipper. Unfortunately, he had no shield and not enough money and was stopped by the infamous $20 penalty one space away. 23 pips lost! Ouch!

Bart, unfortunately, immediately followed this up with his second fictional award: ”The Roy ‘Wrong Way’ Riegels” Award for Navigation Misadventures. Bart needed a “1” any die to get to the Giant World system and a sweet double demand and failed on 4 consecutive rolls before giving up. Bart easily broke Norm Newton’s previous record for dice futility in this tournament. Even so, Bart finished in, well, 4th place, but with almost $1500—his was the second best 4th place is this tournament! If not for this truly astonishingly execrable bad luck, he might have won this game!

The first Heat winners were: Bailey Burdett, Lisa Gutermuth, Greg Romano, Ewan McNay, Vassili Kyrkos, Richard Meyer, Matt Culkins, and Frank McNally.

The second Heat almost had a winner of the “Davey and Goliath” Award. Eric “Davey” Brosius (Scout, no shield, no relics) vs. Steve “Goliath” Dickson (Clipper, Jump Start with 5 telegates in play), but Davey finished a turn short this time.

The winners in the second Heat were Kevin Rice, defending champ Roger Jarrett, Steve Dickson, Dave Finberg, Philip Shea, Luke Koleszar, Gary Dickson, and Patrick Shea.

The third Heat, Jonathan Squibb won the “Always Check that the Iron is Unplugged Before Leaving on Vacation” Award, when he quickly reloaded with Psychosculptures and rocketed off to his next adventure, even though he had necessary cash & deeds to win. The rules are quite clear that victory can only be declared on your own turn. Another did not make the same mistake. Always keep a running count of the cash and deeds!

The third Heat game winners were Richard Meyer, Bill Crenshaw, Roger Jarrett, Eric Brosius, Steve Dickson, and Ewan McNay.

The Semifinal had 12 heat game winners show up. According to the rules specified in the preview, four 3 player games would be played in the Semifinal.

In the first Semifinal game, Ewan McNay beat Bill Crenshaw and Vassily Kyrkos. In Semifinal #2, Bailey Burdett advanced over Luke Koleszar and Roger Jarrett. Semifinal #3 featured Steve Dickson winning over Eric Brosius and Philip Shea. And in the fourth Semifinal, Richard Meyer defeated Frank McNally and Kevin Rice.

The Final had three players as Ewan McNay had a conflict that didn’t end before the Final started. So that left a 3-player Final. Bailey Burdett defeated Steve Dickson and Richard Meyer. Bailey is the youngest champion in this event since Eric Wrobel. Congratulations. Bailey!

As always, I hope everyone followed the #1 rule of this tournament. Have Fun!

Footnotes: References so readers get some of the jokes in this report!

  • “Duck Dodgers in the 24th and Half Century” was 1953 Warner Bros. cartoon starring Daffy Duck. He lisps the line, “I Forgot the Thilly Thing Was in Reverthe,” when he tries to launch his rocket
  • Roy “Wrong Way” Riegels was a center for the Cal Berkeley Golden Bears football team. In the 1929 Rose Bowl, Riegels recovered a fumble and ran for the end zone, unfortunately the wrong one! He was stopped by a teammate, but Cal gave up a safety on the next play, ultimately losing 8-7.
  • “Davey and Goliath” was a religious Claymation cartoon produced by Gumby creator Art Clokey. They are, of course, named after David and Goliath from the Book of Samuel in the Old Testament.
  • According to Urban Legend, irons were frequently left-on at home before the owner left on vacation. Apparently so much so, that irons have auto-shutoff these days.
