Fifty-eight players participated in the first WBC Splendor Duel tournament. The tournament used the same format that 7 Wonders Duel has used in recent years: two Heats were scheduled during which each player would play two games. Any player that won at least two games across the Heats qualified for the Single Elimination Rounds.
Seventy-five games were played over the two Heats. Jon Stern and Andrew Emerick both won all four of their games, advancing as the top seeds. Another four players won three games: Carl Chauvin, Allan Jiang, Alyssa Mills, and Amy Rule. Twenty-one players qualified for the knockout round.
Eighteen of those qualified players turned up for the Single Elimination rounds, meaning five rounds would be played, though only four players had to play in the first round. Chris Wildes and Patti Swift advanced to the top sixteen over Andrew Freeman and Cally Perry, respectively.
After the second Elimination Round, the top eight players faced off in the Quarterfinal. Scores will be listed below using the following notation (Total Points - Total Crowns - Best Single Color Score):
- Jon Stern (20-8-7) defeated Jack Wolff (7-5-3)
- Allan Jiang (23-6-7) defeated Alyssa Mills (12-0-9)
- Andrew Emerick (22-8-5) defeated Thomas Tu (8-0-4)
- Carl Chauvin (14-7-10) defeated Amy Rule (5-1-5)
Jon and Andrew both entered the Semifinal round on undefeated, six-game winning streaks. However, these runs would be ended before the Final as both Allan and Carl pulled off single-color victories:
- Allan Jiang (17-4-10) defeated Jon Stern (14-6-4)
- Carl Chauvin (15-4-10) defeated Andrew Emerick (8-2-3)
In the final game Allan (20-6-8) defeated Carl (18-3-7), getting to 20 points to become the inaugural WBC Splendor Duel champion.
Over the 92 games played, 55 (59.8%) were won by earning 20 points. Ten points in a single color won 27 games (29.4%), while ten crowns won 9 times (9.8%). The player who took the first turn of the game won only 38% of games.
Looking only at the knockout round, 10 of 17 games (58.8%) ended on total points, followed by single color points with 6 wins (35.3%), and crowns with 1 win (5.9%). In this round, the player who took the first turn won 7 games (41.2%).
87% of winners had 3 or more crowns, while 50% had 6 or more. The player who ended the game with the most crowns won 58.7% of games. In the knockout round, this number was 70.6%
Allan had the most 20 point victories, with 6 of his 7 wins earned on total points. Five of Carl’s six wins came via single color score. No player earned more than one crown victory.
Congratulations to all the laurelists and thank you to everyone who attended the event.
