Event Inflation ... 1830 ... 1856
.... 1870
This year's event will be expanded to the best-known 18xx
games other than1830: 1856 (Lower Canada) and 1870 (the American
Southwest). As was the case in 1998, players will qualify for
the final by winning at least two games in four tries. If more
than six players win two or more games, the top six will be selected
for the final. Since your performance is based on your margin
of victory it's best if you win big! As was also true last year,
players will be allowed to vote for an adjudicated outcome where
the result seems foreordained. At any time, the players may agree
amongst themselves to declare a winner and to propose this to
the Event Director. If the Event Director concurs, the game outcome
will be recorded using a score for the winner approximately equivalent
to the mean winning score, but greater than the median winning
score.
For those unfamiliar with last year's scoring system, the
winner receives a score equal to 2.00 minus the second-place
finisher's score expressed as a percentage of the winner's. Thus,
if the top finishers had $10,000 and $8,500, the winner would
get a score of 1.15, while if the top finishers had $10,000 and
$9,900 the winner would get a score of 1.01. An adjudicated outcome
gives the designated winner a score of 1.10. In last year's event,
21 games were played of which two were adjudicated. The mean
winning score in the other 19 games was 1.10. There were six
games where the winner had a score greater than 1.10, ranging
from 1.13 to 1.33, while there were eleven games where the winner
scored less than 1.10, ranging from 1.01 to 1.07.
There were two games in which the winner earned a score of 1.10
in addition to the two adjudicated games. The six finalists in
last year's event all had at least two wins, while two of them
had three. All players who won at least two games participated
in the final. The mean qualifying game score of the finalists
was 1.11. The winning score in the final was 1.04.
There will be four sessions: two 1830 sessions, to be held
Thursday and Friday evenings, and one each of 1856 and 1870.
The 1870 session will be held on Friday and the 1856 one on Saturday.
This should provide the opportunity for a diversified experience
for those who play many different 18xx games while providing
full scope for those who play only 1830 to advance under conditions
familiar to them.
