The nation's pastime ...
SUPERSTAR BASEBALL had been run competitively at nearly every
Avaloncon. Though crowds weren't typically large (ranging from
nine to 23 participants), they are dedicated to the game. If
you're a fan of the most American of games, spend a few moments
with Ruth, Mays, Cobb, DiMaggio, Koufax, and Aaron at this year's
convention. The format will include three- and four-team mini-leagues
pitting each coach once against each other coach in his or her
mini-league. Then, the cream of the crop will play a single-elimination
tournament to decide the World Champion. The entire process should
take no more than seven hours.
To add a personal touch, pre-registered managers are allowed
to build their team by choosing from 300 players, each graded
with a 'salary.' Coaches have a salary cap of $75 with which
to purchase their 20-man roster. Participants who choose to build
their own teams will receive a full-color chart of their customized
team, complete with their name and their chosen team nickname.
Walkon entrants may select from several predetermined teams,
each built with the same salary restrictions. For those attending,
no copies of the game will be necessary, though you should bring
your dice, as extra sets are in short supply. All charts (including
supplemental base-running and injury charts) will be provided.
As this event has been demoted to 'trial' status due to limited
past participation, an additional prize will be awarded to the
winner. A complete set of all players in the new Teams of the
Decades edition will be presented to the champ. This is a set
of individual full-color laminated cards covering the best years
of 300+ all-time all-stars, many not included in any prior editions
of the game. So, pre-register before June 15 and send in your
team request. A list of available players and team-building procedures
is available from the GM or via the web site (see Events links).
The sun is up, the grass is green, the 'dogs are hot, the beer
is cold, and the infield dirt is pristine. It's time to play
ball.
