WBC
EVENT PREVIEWS: In depth previews of
each of the WBC events - all
172 of them - are now on line as only WBC does
them at http://www.boardgamers.org/yearbkex/index.htm.
WBC AUCTION PRE-REGISTRATION NOW OPEN: BPA
is now accepting
pre-registration of lots for its annual WBC
game
auction in Lancaster,
PA on August 1st. Items must be delivered in
person on
Monday night,
July 31st or the following Tuesday morning
before noon
by registered
members. Since the auction is very popular
and lots
are limited to the
first 550 registered, pre-registration of items
for the auction is
highly recommended. Our previous auctions have
sold
out via
pre-registration so don't expect to bring items
unregistered to the
door. Check out the details at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/auction.htm now.
An updated list of
items made available for sale will be posted
in the
weeks preceding the
convention.
WBC AUCTION STORE ADDED: BPA announces the
addition of a store for the
sale of additional lower priced items during
the WBC
auction. Located
in the same showroom with the Auction, buyers
will be
able to peruse
items with a set price within view and earshot
of the
auction. The
Auction Store will allow us to increase the
number of
items handled in
less time while offering sellers a more efficient
way to offer lower
priced items at a reduced commission. Items
in the
Auction Store have a
top price of $30 and cannot be pre-registered.
See http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/auctionstore.htm for details.
WBC SCHEDULING AIDS: Steve Okonski has once
again worked his magic and
presented a host of convenient programming
tools to
help you plan your
WBC week. Choose from among the Custom Scheduler,
an
All-in-One
schedule, or several downloadable pdf pocket
schedules. They can all be
reached from: http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/schedule.htm
WBC LODGING UPDATE: At this time, Lancaster
Host is sold out for most
of the latter portion of WBC. Fortunately,
there are
many hotels within
easy walking distance. However, cancellations
do occur
and the Host is
acting as our Housing Agent for overflow reservations.
Therefore, you
should continue to call the Host at 717-299-5500
weekdays between 8 AM
and 7 PM EST to book your stay and they will
make your
reservation in
the nearest comparable hotel where we have
established
a roomblock with
matching discounted rates. Not only will this
get you
the best deal in
the most convenient lodging, but it will also
credit
the BPA with your
stay and help keep our expenses (and therefore
your
future costs) down.
WBC PRE-REGISTRATION/RIDE/CARPOOL/ROOMMATE/TEAMMATE
SERVICE: If you
want to check your pre-registration status
or look for
a ride,
carpooling from an airport, someone to share
a room
with, a particular
Open Gaming itch you want to setup or just
another
member for your
team, check out the WBC Prep page now on line
at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/prereg.htm.
It will be updated weekly as
information is received. If you'd like help
with any
of the above, just
email your requests to doncon99@toad.net to
be listed on the page. All
we ask is that you notify us to remove your
listing
once your need is
fulfilled. And if you can't wait for the pre-reg
form
to arrive in the
mail, you can download an abridged pdf version
at the
same page by
clicking on the pre-register link.
NAPPY
MOVES SOUTH: The Fourth Annual BPA Waterloo
mini-con for players
of The Napoleonic Wars is shifting
to the Amerisuites
Hotel in
Greenville, SC on October 13th-15th.
Hosted by the
Greenville Mafia,
Waterloo will also receive a major
format makeover
with exclusive play
of the three-player version in the
interest of
presenting the most
balanced version of the game. Check
out the details at http://www.boardgamers.org/specific/wat06ann.htm.
WAM FORMAT CHANGE: Faced with declining
attendance and
rising costs,
the WAM meeting for two-player CDWs
has also moved -
but just a few
miles to Days Hotel in Timonium, MD.
The weekend
before the Super Bowl
is still the time frame (Jan 26th-28)
with optional
opening Mulligans
on Thursday, the 25th. The 5th meeting
of the Winter
Activation
Meeting will attempt to revive its
fortunes with more
affordable
lodging and a change in format which
both adds and
subtracts events.
Only three events will receive feature
status (Paths
of Glory, Twilight
Struggle and Wilderness War) but opportunities
to play
Hannibal, For
The People, We The People, Empire of
the Sun and
Triumph of Chaos will
fill the lean hours between rounds.
Any such event
which draws a
minimum of 16 players will earn full
tournament
status. Check out the
plans at http://www.boardgamers.org/specific/wam07ann.htm
ENLIGHTENMENT X SET FOR TIMONIUM: Also
embracing the"less is more"
theory is the tenth rendition of Enlightenment which
will move down the
road to Days Hotel in Timonium on March 23rd-25th,
2007. The format
will be pared to the original four rounds of Age of
Renaissance play
with Open Gaming filling in between rounds. See the
details at
http://www.boardgamers.org/specific/aor07ann.htm.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2006 ELECTION: The E-Ballot
for the
2006 Board of
Director's election is now available at http://www.boardgamers.org/election.htm.
Please take a
moment to cast
your vote sometime before the July 15th deadline.
WBC STAFF POSITIONS: A limited number of
paid staff
positions are
available for this summer's WBC convention
as Junior
room monitors or
Security/Room monitors. If finances prevent
your
attendance, this is
your chance to get free room and admission
plus wages.
Free rooms must
be shared with a roommate - so candidates
applying as
a pair willing to
share a room are encouraged. If interested,
please
email doncon99@toad.net no
later than May 1st. Candidates
for Juniors Monitor
should list relevant experience as teachers,
camp
counselors, etc.

PBeM NEWS
GETTYSBURG: Barry Shoults of Attica, MI has
won the
first Gettysburg
'88 BPA PBeM Championship by defeating Mike
Pacheco of
Oakland, CA for
the crown. Barry did it the hard way, starting
as seed
#23, not
receiving a bye in the first round, besting
seeds nos.
10, 5, 3, and 2
in the process - and all while playing the
Union five
straight times
without a bid! There was a weird symmetry between the
2005 WBC and the
PBeM tournaments. The WBC was won by Jim Tracy, who
lost his one
previous tournament game (in this PBeM tournament)
as
the Union, then
won five games as the Confederates to claim
the WBC
crown. The PBeM
Championship has now been claimed by Barry,
who lost
his one previous
tournament game (at the WBC) as the Confederates,
then
won five email
games as the Union to claim the PBeM crown.
Overall, the Rebels won 16 of the games and the Union
9. Or, to put it
another way, the Confederate record against anybody
not named Barry
Shoults was 16-4. The higher seeded player won only
11 of the 25
contests. One player bid for the Union while eight
bid for the Rebels;
in 16 games there was no bid. Curiously, the sides
split the 16 no-bid
games evenly, but the South won seven of eight in
which it gave up a
bid. Our champion, Barry Shoults obviously took best
Union player
honors with his 5-0 log, while Tom Grode copped best
Confederate at
3-0. Also winning laurels by finishing 3rd thru 6th
respectively were:
Ted Drozd, Tom Grode, Vince Meconi and Bill Place.

All
BPA PBeM tournaments
require current BPA membership when
the event starts. All multi-day paid
attendees to WBC are current
BPA members for the balance of that
calendar year. Associate Calendar
year memberships enabling play in all
PBeM events starting in that
year cost only $10 and earn discounts
for admission to all BPA
gaming conferences. You
need not keep your
membership current in order to finish
a PBeM event. Players may
join the BPA throughout the year. Members
are reminded they
can upgrade their current memberships
at any time by remitting the additional
funds. See the BPA
Terms page for details.BPA
members who would
like to see an email
tournament for their
favorite game are encouraged to step
forward as the GM of
such an event. BPA does not run tournaments.
Rather, we are an organization of gamers lending
support to one another so such events can happen.
No one cares as much
about your hobby as you
do. Get involved. See the requirements to
host a BPA email tournament.
