It only took Randy Buehler two years to climb to the top of
the BPA rankings by unseating two-time defending Caesar Stefan
Mecay to become the BPA's top competitor in 2011. True to form,
Stefan had again run up a big lead before WBC began in email tournaments
and by winning his Twilight Struggle specialty at WAM,
but Randy reduced that lead by scoring in five Euro Quest tournaments
before overtaking Stefan altogether with a dominating WBC that
included a second in the Through the Ages pre-con as well
as three outright wins in Dominion, Egizia, and Princes
of Florence. Randy's win knotted the score at the top with
four wargamer Caesars offset by four predominantly Euro-playing
top dogs. Two Caesars (Mullet and Benedict) have defied classification
with more varied tastes.
Rounding out the top six BPA competitors for 2011 were 2004
Caesar James Pei, Jason Ley, and a pair of second generation oncomers;
Richard Beyma and Nick Henning, threatening to overtake the illustrous
records of their fathers. Again, only eight of last year's Top
25 players managed to retain that high ranking led by Buehler
who improved from 16th in his inaugural campaign to first in his
second. The other top scorers to retain their Top 25 standing
were Mecay, Pei, Beyma, Henning, Robert Kircher, Jason Levin and
Eric Freeman. Absent from the Leader Board for the first time
in four years were Alex Bove and Chris Byrd—thus ending the
longest streaks in the high rent district. No one has maintained
their status in the Top 25 for four straight years.

2011 Consul - N/A
For the first time since 2007 when Raphael Lehrer swept both
the Caesar and Consul awards, our Caesar will rule alone. Randy
Buehler's performance proved the best in both the seven days of
WBC week proper and the cumulative totals of all BPA tournaments
during the year as well. In keeping with our Roman inspiration,
no Consul award will be presented in 2011 so that Randy can bask
in all his glory.
The other top contenders who surpassed 100 laurels at WBC included
Nick Henning, Richard Meyer, Curt Collins, Richard Beyma and James
Pei in that order. Although Randy won three events he fended off
competition for Consul by scoring in five others. Curt Collins
came closest to matching him in divesity with points from six
events, but they were much smaller. In contrast, Kevin Youells
scored the most laurels with his two wins but failed to pick up
points elsewhere. Only Henning managed to repeat as a top Consul
contender, improving from 4th in 2010 to second in 2011.
