2018 Tournament Format Swiss

ENTER THE ARENA!

Each match is a battle to the death with players taking the role of dueling mages that cast spells, summon creatures, and out maneuver their opponent. The event format is the same as 2017 with no player elimination. We will use a Swiss format with 5 total rounds of arena matches scheduled over two tournament days. Players will use Apprentice rules for Day 1 rounds and the Advanced rules in Day 2 rounds. Players with the best records will be paired against each other in every round. The Event will use the Mage Wars Arena Core Set with no expansions. Current rules are available at www.magewars.comunder the Resources & Downloads section.

OVERVIEW OF EVENT FORMAT

Demo Apprentice Rules - Several demonstrations are planned prior to each Tournament Day for new players. Apprentice rules will be demonstrated before Round 1 to learn the Apprentice rules and practice playing with the Beastmaster, Wizard, Priestess, or Warlock.

Tournament Day 1 - Two Rounds of 90-minute matches with players using Apprentice rules with the pre-built spellbooks from the Arena Core Set (see page 3 of rulebook). All players advance to Day 2 rounds and continue to earn tournament points each round.

Demo Advanced Rules - Several demonstrations are planned prior to Tournament Day 2 to learn the Advanced rules including Mage Abilities and new rules.

Tournament Day 2 - Three Rounds of 90-minute matches with players using Advanced rules. Players have the option of using the pre-built spellbooks for Advanced play (see page 38 of rulebook) or customizing their own.

Tournament Results - Players will be ranked at the end of Day 2 based on the sum of Tournament Points earned over the course of the 5 tournament rounds.

TOURNAMENT POINT SYSTEM

Tournament Points (TP) are awarded for each round using the highest of the following:

  • Kill Opponent = 5TP
  • Highest Remaining Health (Life minus Damage) = 3TP
  • Lowest Remaining Health = 1TP
  • Tied Remaining Health = 1TP
  • Mage Death = 0TP

Tie-breakers for ranking players at the end of the tournament are, in priority order: Highest Number of Kills, Highest Total TPs of Opponents Played, and High Roll of 12-sided Die. For pairing of players for each round the die roll will be replaced with a random assignment using standard playing cards to assign tied players to matches. Players will be ranked by total points scored over all rounds of tournament play. Demos do not score TPs for players.

MAGE SELECTION

Tournament Day 1 - Players may select any of the 4 Core Set Mages in each round, but may not select the same mage more than once on this day. I.e. Players must play a different mage in each round on the first day so two different mages will be selected.

Tournament Day 2 - Players will select one of the 4 Core Set Mages to play for the remainder of the tournament. If players decide to use a custom spellbook rather than a pre-built spellbook on Day 2, then players must register their custom spellbook with the GM no later than the registration period at the start of Day 2 rounds. The spellbook registration form is available online (https://www.dropbox.com/s/5s9ilknu0baqpez/Spellbook%20Registration%20Sheet%20V2.pdf?dl=0) or printed copies will be provided by the GM during Demos and Day 1 Rounds.

Additional Prizes: Arcane Wonder will offer additional prizes and promo cards for players to earn.
