Swiss Format. Three heats were played during this phase.
Participants could play one game per day, however, additional
wins after the first did not confer any special benefit other
than that of additional experience. A total of 27 games were
played this year, which was down significantly from last year.
Many wouldbe players were unable to participate due to lack of
games - this despite the provision of three spare games by the
GM. The moral - bring games to play! Don't depend on the kindness
of others. The victory totals had Darth Maul winning 15 and the
Naboo 12. Results were as follows:
Tuesday Heat: Darth Maul, 6 wins - Naboo, 4 wins.
Wednesday Heat: Darth Maul, 4 wins - Naboo, 3 wins.
Thursday Heat: Darth Maul, 5 wins - Naboo, 5 wins.
Notable events during the Swiss included total annihilation
of the defending champion, Larry Lingle, by a child, Andrew Sinigaglio.
Andrew, appropriately enough, playing the dark side, eliminated
every Naboo piece except Anakin in only 30 minutes. A rare contest
involved the Jedi and Darth Maul all being eliminated early in
the game - the Federation held onto the throne room for a win.
Single
Elimination. A total of 20 games were played with the Naboo
winning 55%. The elimination rounds were played successively
every two hours with no breaks and no byes. Adjudication was
never necessary and most games finished well before the two-hour
time limit. When an odd number of participants advanced to a
following round, an eliminator was pressed into service to preclude
a bye.
During the 1st elimination round, 22 qualifying winners squared
off for battle to the death. Darth Maul won six of the 11 games.
During succeeding rounds, Darth Maul tallied five wins, while
the Naboo won four. The final tally for all 47 games played was
Darth Maul 26 - Naboo, 21.
The first place finisher, Brian Sutton, won four straight
during the Single Elimination gauntlet. This was not an easy
task, as previous champions Larry Lingle, Buddy Sinigaglio and
Phil Rennert were all involved during the single elimination
rounds. Brian bested Lee Fitzjerrels of Monaco in the championship
game by eliminating Darth Maul quickly, whereupon Lee threw in
the towel. That ended a four-year dry spell for Brian who collected
his seventh wood with the victory.
Larry Lingle was not unstoppable this year, because it has
been rumored that he wasted his best dice beating his wife. The
defending doncon champ bit the dust in the second single elimination
round when his Darth Maul was skewered by the Jedi whilst his
Droids were systematically dismembered. Better luck next year
Larr!
